There is a dearth of appropriate tools for open, collaborative decision making, particularly in multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder thorny problems and dilemas. The approach we will be taking in this event is a working manifestation of one way of squaring that particular circle. It may not be the answer, but it is certainly part of an answer in that regard. There is no better way to understand the power and simplicity of approach than to experience it first hand.
You are cordially invited to an informal discussion and networking-seminar taking place in Edinburgh on Saturday 17th May, 10am (for 10.15 start) – until 5pm.
The Objective:
To identify the most important underlying cause(s) of our modern civilisation’s apparent race towards self-destruction.
Why?
Here is a list of tasks (please refine and add to it)
To volunteer for a task put your username in square brackets eg. [name]:
* refining and explaining the concept - making it easily digestible [paul]
* validating the concept - seeking a variety of views and suggestions
* posting about the concept and the site on blogs, comments and forums
* Feedback on useability of the website
* PR to promote the 2020people concept and the site and generate interest and participation [paul]
* Refine and develop the site (drupal, LAMP, web-design skills needed)
here's a starter for 10...
1. what is our shared high level goal? - can we agree on the specifics?
2. what's good about the way things are now? - let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater
3. what's wrong with the way things are now? - building the case for change!
4. how good could things be in the future? - what is our vision of successful change?
5. what do we need to do to achieve our vision? - what is the necessary sequence of events, resources etc?
Parallel track (or preliminary themes / tasks)
We often come across situations that require careful consideration of the views of multiple stakeholders and the understanding of a wide variety of constraints and pressures before making an important decision or designing a solution to a problem. But often the groups that are charged with making those decisions have no way of reaching a shared understanding of the problem let alone coming to a reasonable consensus on what should be done about it.
The "wee chat" took place on Saturday May 17th. The participants we had were the right ones, and the discussion was lively and robust. We engaged in several very interesting and enlightening discussions and tunnelled into some of the issues and inter-connections and dependencies around our modern civilisation's "core problem". While much work remains to be done to uncover and define the 1 core problem which is the root cause of all others, significant progress was made.
Several candidate core-problems surfaced during the day including:
One simple thing you can do that will help us enormously in reaching our objectives is to leave behind a list of the issues you think are the biggest problems our global civilisation is facing at the moment. If you have a notion or intuition of what the core problem may be please also add that to the list. You can leave the list as a personal blog entry tagged as Shared Plan Stage "2-current problems (what's not working well now)", or you can contribute the to the forums (http://www.2020people.com/forum/1) where they can be more easily collated and compared with others.
2020people is having its first event on Saturday May 17th in Edinburgh, Scotland. A facilitated discussion to establish the root causes of our civilisation's major problems. All welcome.

I'm planning an event in Edinburgh in June-July 2008. A series of 4 weekday evening workshop discussion, each lasting around 2 hours. The purpose is to identify the world's core problem - in other words the root cause of the world's collision course with environmental and social catastrophe. If you are interested in taking part or in following and participating online please make sure you are a registered user of this site. I'll post more details shortly.
When the website is finally ready the first task for us as participants in a process of collaborative problem solving is to agree the shared goal of the endeavour.
